Being Tara: Great White Soothing Tara

  • Monadnock Mindfulness Practice Center 103 Roxbury St., Suite 301 Keene, NH, 03431 USA (map)

Facilitator: Eve Kodiak
Format: Hybrid: In-Person or Online

One origin story for Tara is that she appeared in the pool of tears shed by Avalokiteshvara, when he despaired of being able to save all sentient beings. Holding a blue lotus, she filled him with love and reminds us all that we can't do anything without help. Another story is that a transcendently wise young woman, Yeshe Dawa (Princess Wisdom Moon) was approached by monks, who advised her to become a man so that she could attain enlightenment. The princess kindly told them that enlightenment was a genderless state . . . and vowed that she would only become enlightened in female form.

The foundational Tara is green. She has one knee crooked in meditation, and the other leg outstretched to jump down from her cushion to help all who are in need - right away! Like a prism, Green Tara has many facets. These 21 emanations appear as different colors, with different mantras and "specialties." With Green Tara, we will explore the foundational experience of compassion in action. With Red Tara, we will explore how to be courageous and keep our hearts open in difficult times. With White Tara, we will work on releasing the painful emotions that hinder self-love.

We will do this by "being" Tara. We'll experience how it feels to meditate in Tara's poses. We will chant her mantras, explore the color and focus of each emanation, and see how each relates to our own lives. Although each workshop builds upon the last, a single workshop can be taken at any point in the series. Tara is complete in any of her emanations.

Suggested donation for each workshop is $20 - $50.
No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
All proceeds go directly to support the Monadnock Mindfulness Practice Center.
